Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Possible Thanks to Keanu Reeves Being in the Game

Cyberpunk 2077

The Cyberpunk franchise has been well-known to tabletop gamers for a long time, but it seem like it’s about to expand in a big way. Of course, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 launches early next year, and in a new interview with Video Games Chronicle, franchise-creator Mike Pondsmith hints big-name actors like Keanu Reeves being in the game could might just lead to a movie…

I can’t really say anything on [the movie rights]. But with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility. At this point we are teaching people about this new kind of cyberpunk. My favorite film is Blade Runner, but I recognize inherently that it’s a cerebral film and 2049 was even more cerebral. We found a sweet spot with Cyberpunk which is, we make you think, but we don’t bog you down and give you an education.

According to VGC, Pondsmith simple replied with a “no comment” when asked if any other major actors will be appearing in Cyberpunk 2077. Pure speculation on my part, but I have a feeling Keanu won’t be the last announcement.

Back on the subject of video games, CD Projekt Red isn’t working on three Cyberpunk games at once as previously reported, but it sounds like Pondsmith is eager to team with them again.

I hope so. Lord knows we’d do more of these if we can sell a few copies. […] At the core, they’re people who are honorable, straightforward, care deeply about what they do for who they’re creating for. All of us are very much driven by what fans will get out of this, because we are fans. I have so many friends there, that if I didn’t have a company in Seattle, I would probably move to Poland just to hang out.

Cyberpunk 2077 arrives on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on April 16, 2020.
