Google had previously confirmed that the upcoming Pixel flagships will feature a square bulge at the back to house the cameras and while the search giant is unlikely to divulge more information, we can always count on leakers to bring us the latest scoop. This time, those leak focus on the Pixel 4 XL renders and we have to say, the design has changed significantly, assuming Google chooses this as the final product. If yes, then Google gets a two thumbs up from us.
Renders Show the Pixel 4 XL Could Ship Without the Unsightly Notch, With No Rear-Mounted Fingerprint Solution
This time around, OnLeaks and PriceBaba have revealed some Pixel 4 XL renders and based on the track record of OnLeaks, it is difficult to refute what he’s revealed to us today. Google’s Pixel 4 XL will reportedly sport a 6.25-inch display and measure 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm. The thickness around the square bump on the back is tipped to be 9.3mm. Based on these measurements, the Pixel 4 XL is expected to be a tad bit larger than the Pixel 3 XL.
The leaked Pixel 4 XL renders also show that the unsightly notch is thankfully gone, and has been replaced by a chunky top bezel instead to accommodate two cameras and a speaker grill. Although nothing is known about the front camera specifications at the moment, one of the front units could be a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor and it is rumored to help the Pixel 4 XL with a gesture control system. Moreover, it might also be there to facilitate a face unlock feature, as the Android Q beta releases hint that this biometric system might finally make its way to Pixel phones this year.
The bottom bezel looks remarkably small, which is perhaps the reason why the front-facing speaker has been swapped with a bottom-firing speaker, which can be seen alongside a USB Type-C port on the lower edge of the phone. The back of the phone shows a triple camera array and rumor has it that one of those would be a 16MP telephoto lens and one would be a ToF sensor (though we’re hoping for a wide-angle lens instead). Another thing that the renders seem to imply is that the Pixel 4 XL won’t have a rear-mounted scanner.
This can mean that Google will either up using the in-display fingerprint reader, or one that’s embedded in the power button on the side of the handset. If you ask us, we’d much rather have one on the side, since in-screen scanners still have their slew of problems.
