The Nokia 9 PureView made headlines by becoming the first Android-powered flagship to feature five rear cameras. However, using outdated hardware would not have been everyone’s cup of tea, and it looks like on the horizon, there might be good news inbound. The Penta-lens flagship might be succeeded by the Nokia 9.1 PureView, featuring improved hardware specifications, with a focus on the camera too. It looks like HMD Global wants to excessively improve where they left off with the Nokia 9 PureView, and perhaps even address the complaints users had earlier.
Nokia 9.1 PureView Was Earlier Rumored to Launch in Q3 2019; HMD Global Might Have Delayed it to Work More on the Camera
To avoid the bad press that the Nokia 9 PureView faced initially, HMD Global will most likely be taking its sweet time in preparing the Nokia 9.1 PureView in improving the camera hardware. According to Nokiapoweruser, sources claim that they are hopeful of a Q4 2019 launch of the flagship that will now come armed with a Snapdragon 855 and support for 5G connectivity. Sadly though, it’s disappointing that these ‘sources’ haven’t mentioned a Snapdragon 855 Plus, which was announced by Qualcomm not too long ago.
There are reports claiming that the newly announced SoC costs the same as the Snapdragon 855, so if that’s the case, it will be puzzling if HMD Global doesn’t go with the very best internals to compete with the rest of the flagships launching in H2 2019. The licensee has also partnered with digital photography company Light to bring significant improvements to the Nokia 9.1 PureView’s camera.
HMD Global is said to work more on the overall performance, with a special focus given to the video and low-light aspects of the optics. Camera speed could be increased, with additional improvements thanks to a better processor and software algorithms. While the company is at it, the in-screen fingerprint scanner could also be given some preferential treatment.
The Nokia 9 PureView’s under-display scanner can be bypassed by a chewing gum, making a mockery of its biometrics, so HMD might want to be a little more stringent on the security bits of the smartphone. With the improved hardware comes an increase in the price, naturally. The Nokia 9 PureView currently retails for $499 in the U.S., and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Nokia 9.1 PureView starts from $700+. It might even adopt a punch-hole display like the Galaxy S10 range, but let us see how real or noteworthy these changes are later in the year.
