Snap Inc’s $380 Spectacles 3 Unveiled

Snap, the company behind the popular social network Snapchat is no stranger to the world of AR-powered hardware. The company's previous Google Glass-Esque products—the Spectacles and Spectacles 2—received a lukewarm response from the public. Snap Inc., on the other hand, still has faith in the Spectacles. Today, the company officially unveiled the latest addition to the Spectacles family in the form of Spectacles 3. The glasses are available to pre-order right now and are expected to ship out sometime this fall. They come in two colour variants and are priced $380 a pop.

The Spectacles 3 come with two buttons on either side. To get started, simply tap either button on the frame to start recording for 60 seconds. The videos are then saved within the Snapchat app. Press-and-hold either button to take a still photograph. There is visible light, and blinking LED indicator when a video is being recorded or when a photo is taken, presumably to prevent people from photographing others secretly.

Spectacles 3 feature a steel frame design with circular lenses and adjustable tips. It also comes with a pair of HD cameras which support depth perception and wide range of AR-based applications. Additionally, Photos and videos wirelessly sync to your phone, where you can retouch images with a suite of 3D Effects on Snapchat. It comes with a microfibre interior which also folds flat when not in use.

The Spectacles 3 are available to pre-order beginning today directly from Snap’s website for Mineral or Carbon colours. Snap Inc. says that they'll only make a limited number of these, so if this is something that piques your interest, head over to the official website to call dibs on your pair. The limited production run does make sense, considering the dismal sales numbers of the glasses' predecessors.
