Rumors have been flying around about an iPhone SE successor since earlier this year. The budget phone was launched back in 2016 with a starting price of $399. Although Apple hasn’t followed up with a second iteration yet, it seems that’s about to change and we may see the iPhone SE 2 launch next year, at least according to the latest report.
Fresh Report Claims Sharp Will Supply Apple With 5-Inch Displays for the iPhone SE 2
Earlier, the consensus was that Apple was not interested in proceeding with an iPhone SE 2 launch as it might not be a money-making machine for the technology giant. However, with new evidence piling up, it seems the Cupertino giant has decided to tap into the mid-tier segment, according to CnBeta, which was mentioned Korean media talking about the iPhone SE 2. According to rumors, the phone will be launched in the first half of 2020 and most likely to keep keeps down to a minimum, it will be equipped with an LCD panel rather than an OLED screen.
According to the new report, Apple will be sourcing the display from Sharp. The report says it will be around 5 inches when measured diagonally, which is slightly bigger than what previous rumors have claimed about an affordable future iPhone touting a 4.7-inch display. Apparently, Apple was previously considering LG as the LCD supplier for the budget device, but the South Korean manufacturer reportedly pulled out because the Cupertino giant wasn’t paying enough for the business deal. A different report also claims that an iPhone SE 2 launch will take place next year to help Apple garner the revenue it has lost due to global slowdown of the smartphone market.
If previously published findings are anything to go by, the design of the iPhone SE 2 will be similar to that of the iPhone 8. However, it’s tipped to get the same components as the iPhone 11 series which means it might be fueled by the A13 Bionic. Apparently, the iPhone SE 2 launch is a backup option for Apple to pick up the slack if the recently released phones fail to attract considerable demand.
The new model is expected to cost less than the iPhone XR, which to remind you, now starts at $599. Given that the base model of the iPhone 8 now costs $449, it’s hard to say how Apple will position the iPhone SE 2 pricing. Since it’s rumored to feature a more powerful SoC than the iPhone 8, the California-based giant might discontinue the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus next year and replace it with the iPhone SE 2.
