The latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update has been dealing with a ton of problems lately introduced by the monthly cumulative updates. Last month's update brought with it a high CPU usage issue that was fixed with this week's September's patch. But, this patch ended up creating problems with the Start menu and Search experience for some users.
The Windows maker has now acknowledged this Windows 10 1903 bug. In a support document, Microsoft writes:
Some users report issues related to the Start menu and Windows Desktop Search
Microsoft has received reports that some users are having issues related to the Start menu and Windows Desktop Search.
Affected platforms:
- Client: Windows 10, version 1903
The company hasn't shared when to expect a fix. In the "next steps," it only says that it is "presently investigating" the problem and "will provide an update when more information is available."
In the meantime, users can either wait for an update that addresses this issue or try installing the latest update anyway, since the Search and Start menu bug reportedly affects only a small number of users. You can always uninstall it if you do experience any bugs following this guide (written for the August update, but the same steps can be followed for this month's Windows 10 cumulative update, as well.)
Do note that the latest Windows 10 1903 cumulative update also fixed two zero-day vulnerabilities. At this point, Windows 10 cumulative updates have become a Sophie's Choice between patching up security flaws and receiving new system bugs.
