Pixel 4 Storage Speeds Reportedly Slower Than a Few 2019 Flagships

Last year, when Android phone manufacturers were launching devices with a whopping 8GB RAM, Google decided to take a step back and launch the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM each. This year looks to be a repeat of a compromise again but in a different category. According to a new benchmark leak, the Pixel 4 storage speeds could be slower than a few 2019 Android flagships. At least the good news here is that we’re getting a slightly upgraded design and more cameras.

UFS 3.0 Flash Memory Might Not Be Present on the Pixel 4 & Pixel 4 XL, as Google Reportedly Looks to Stick With the UFS 2.1 Standard

The UFS 3.0 standard that’s complied by devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro and Galaxy Note 10, to name a few, gives them significant advantages. Apps open up a lot faster, the UI becomes much smoother with little to no noticeable lag or hitch in the OS. It also opens more doors for users to start recording footage at higher resolutions and framerates. Unfortunately, where the Pixel 4 storage speeds are concerned, Google might shift in the reverse gear as the company could incorporate UFS 2.1 storage in both models launching later this year.

According to a leaked benchmark spotted by 91mobiles, the Pixel 4 storage speeds peak at 655.57 MB/s for the sequential read category and 254.48 MB/s for sequential write. In a previously reported benchmark, the Galaxy Note 10 obtains an astonishing 1577.14 MB/s and 591.62 MB/s in the sequential read and write speed departments, respectively, showing the massive differences between the two storage standards. We certainly hope this isn’t the case because even with the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL featuring stock Android, the experience could be choppier than devices equipped with UFS 3.0 flash memory.

If we ignore the Pixel 4 storage speeds and look at the bright side for just a moment, at least Google will up the RAM count on both devices. According to a previous specifications rumor, both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will ship with 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM, which is an increase of 50 percent memory from last year. Sadly, it is pale in comparison to manufacturers like ASUS shipping phones with 12GB RAM. Like always, we recommend treating this leak with a pinch of salt and awaiting future updates in order to know for sure if the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL support UFS 2.1 speeds or not.

According to a tipster, both phones are expected to get unveiled in October of this year, so with less than a month remaining for September to finish, we’ll know eventually what kind of speeds of expect from Google’s latest and greatest phone series.
