Just a while back, Xiaomi’s Mi MIX Alpha pushed the boundaries of smartphone technology with a display that extends to the back and boasts a screen-to-body ratio of 180.6 percent. While that’s one of the most interesting things about the device, the triple rear camera setup which includes that 108MP unit is something that will be on the tongue of several individuals. The Chinese company has now shared some official Mi MIX Alpha camera samples to show how the device can perform in this department.
The Mi MIX Alpha camera samples look detailed, thanks to the 108MP sensor that Xiaomi jointly made with Samsung. While we couldn’t get a hold of the samples, GSMArena definitely did, and you can check out the details below. The primary sensor sports an enormous 1/1.33-inch size which should allow the phone to capture a great deal of light. To improve low-light photography, pixel binning technology is also used to crank out high-quality 27MP photos. The 108MP sensor is joined by a 20MP 117-degree wide-angle unit and a 12MP telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom.
Xiaomi has also demonstrated that the phone can zoom in 8x while preserving the details. Do keep in mind that these camera samples have been downscaled but you’ll still have an idea of what to expect from such a sensor. The company claims that the phone can capture images bearing a massive 12,032 by 9,024 resolution. However, this doesn’t necessarily guarantee great photos as software also plays a huge role. That’s how Apple’s and Google’s devices manage to churn out great photos without needing sensors with a higher resolution. Since the screen wraps around the back, a selfie camera isn’t required.
That’s why the main camera system can also be used as a selfie shooter, providing the same image quality. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus, 12GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 memory. Inside, there is a 4050mAh battery and it supports 40W wired fast charging. Not surprisingly, the phone also supports 5G connectivity.
To experience the same image quality as you did after viewing these Mi MIX Alpha camera samples, it’ll cost you a great deal of cash. However, availability will be limited and the price is expected to reach RMB 20,000 or a whopping $2,815 USD. Will there be any takers at this price remains to be seen. We certainly hope to see more manufacturers taking bold steps like this in pursuit of opening new doors and exploring what they can do on a small computing device like this.
