Exynos 9830 To Have 4x Cortex A77 Cores To Power Samsung Galaxy S11

This August, Korean tech giant Samsung announced its Exynos 9825 SoC. The chip served as a good platform for the company to experiment with 7nm EUV LPP (Low Power Plus) - the node that will power next year's high-end Android gadgets. However, apart from node shrinkage, the Exynos 9825 did not change its microarchitectural layout and so was able to offer only a slight clock boost over the Exynos 9820.

Now, we've got a report for Samsung's next Exynos processor, the tentatively dubbed Exynos 9830. The report suggests that Samsung will make an important change with the SoC. Take a look below for more details.

Samsung Will Not Introduce Its Custom Mongoose CPU Cores On Exynos 9830 Suggests Report

In a fresh report, tipster Ice_Universe believes that Samsung's next high-end mobile processor will not feature a new or old iteration of the company's Mongoose core architecture. Instead, the company will rely exclusively on ARM's Cortex designs.

For reference, Samsung's latest Exynos 9825 processor features an octa-core CPU. Two of the cores are Samsung's Mongoose M4 cores with wide front-end piplines, two are ARM's Cortex A75 cores and four are ARM's Cortex A55 cores. The Exynos 9830 it seems, will remove the M4's successor from the equation.

Today's report suggests that the Exynos 9830 will feature four Cortex A55 cores for low-performance needs and four Cortex A77 cores for high-performance. The reasons behind this shift can vary. For instance, Samsung loves wider front ends on its Mongoose cores, but as ARM's Cortex A77 cores have wider instruction cycles, a 64B runahead window and other optimizations, perhaps Samsung feels that a redesign of the the British chip house's parameters won't be worth the effort.

ARM's Cortex A77 cores mark the second generation of the comnpany's design overhaul with the Cortex A76. It doubles branch prediction bandwidth, adds a new macro-op cache and replaced the A76's nanoBTB and macroBTB with a single L1 BTB with 64 entries and single cycle latency.

Apart from the fact that Samsung will drop the Mongoose architecture on the next Exynos, Ice_Unvierse provides us with little details.
