Apple's 2019 iPhone lineup comes with a host of features that make the gadgets an attractive purchase. One of these is waterproofing, which according to Apple, allows the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max to be submerged to 4 meters for up to 30 minutes. It's a tall claim, and if valid, will allow lots of users to be careless with their devices. Well, the good folks over at CNET decided to put the claims to test using a robot. Apple's iPhone 11 & iPhone 11 Pro Max Survive Being Submerged Up To 8 Metres Underwater
Apple's stated waterproofing for the iPhone 11 is 2 meters for the iPhone 11, which is 2 meters less than the iPhones 11 Pro. However, today's test reveals that even the iPhone 11 can survive at the stated 4 meters of depth for the iPhone 11 Pro. CNET conducted three tests; the first of these submerged the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro at 4 meters for 30 minutes.
After being brought to the surface, both smartphones' cameras and touch screens performed normally. However, both of their speakers were waterlogged, with the iPhone 11's speaker being worse off. The second test submerged both devices at an eight-meter depth for 30 minutes, and after being brought to the surface, the only problems present were with the speakers.
The final test involved submerging both devices under 12 meters of water for 30 minutes. Surprisingly, both smartphones survived again, with only the speakers malfunctioning. After the tests were completed, the phones were washed with clean water, dried with a lint-free towel and left on their own for 72 hours. Once the waiting was over, the devices' touch screen, controls, camera, charging and speaker were once again tested. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro performed normally in all these areas, and their speakers improved once the water had dried out.
However, the devices' speakers did not emit their best output which is natural since it's near impossible for the speaker to retain full functionality after water damage. The iPhone 11's output was approximately 5 decibels lower than a non-submerged iPhone 11, and the iPhone 11 Pro's output was approximately 6 decibels lower than a non-submerged iPhone 11 Pro Max. The results are impressive and go far beyond what an average user should encounter. Kudos to Apple for retaining its image of designing durable gadgets.
