AMD Navi 14 ‘Radeon RX’ GPU SKUs Detailed, XTX Variant Features Up To 1717 MHz Peak Clock

AMD is preparing a whole range of Radeon RX Navi 14 GPUs featuring different core and clock configurations, as reported by Reddit users at r/AMD. The findings from users at the subreddit reveal that AMD is working on at least five variants of the Navi 14 GPU which will soon be offered in different budget and mainstream solutions on desktop and notebook platforms.

AMD's Radeon RX Navi 14 GPUs To Come In Five Different Configurations - Peak Clock Rated at 1717 MHz for Navi 14 XTX SKU

Officially, we know of three Navi 14 configurations which would be used for the Radeon RX 5500, Radeon RX 5500 XT and Radeon RX 5500M discrete graphics cards/chips. However, the latest info which is sourced to the agd5f/Linux repository, reveals that there are a total of five Navi 14 SKUs, including the ones I just mentioned above. These include:

  • NAVI14_UMD_PSTATE_PEAK_XT_GFXCLK 1670 MHz
  • NAVI14_UMD_PSTATE_PEAK_XTM_GFXCLK 1448 MHz
  • NAVI14_UMD_PSTATE_PEAK_XLM_GFXCLK 1181 MHz
  • NAVI14_UMD_PSTATE_PEAK_XTX_GFXCLK 1717 MHz
  • NAVI14_UMD_PSTATE_PEAK_XL_GFXCLK 1448 MHz

What's interesting about these SKUs is that their peak clock rate is mentioned. As most of you here know, with Navi GPUs, AMD somewhat changed the way clocks are referred to. The base clock will be the standard operating clock by default but when it comes to boost frequencies, we are looking at two unique clocks. One is the game clock and the other is the boost clock. The game clock is the average boost clock where the GPU is usually going to sit in while the boost clock is actually the top or peak rated speed that the GPU can hit. This is where each different configuration falls in as they are designed to hit a certain peak clock threshold.

The Linux repository uses the term 'Peak clock' for the game clock and that is how we will try to match and find which config will be used on which Navi 14 products. So let's get the three main SKUs out of the way, the Navi 14 XTX (1717 MHz) is for the Radeon RX 5500 XT, the Navi 14 XT is for the Radeon RX 5500 (1670 MHz), the Navi 14 XTM (1448 MHz) is for the Radeon RX 5500M. This leaves us with two SKUs, the Navi 14 XL and the Navi 14 XLM.

It is said that the Navi 14 XL could be a lower-tier desktop graphics card known as the Radeon RX 5300 with a game clock of 1448 MHz. Similarly, the Navi 14 XLM SKU could be used in a cut-down mobility chip known as the Radeon RX 5300M with a clock speed of 1181 MHz.

AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT and Radeon RX 5500 Graphics Card Specifications

The AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT seems to be the flagship variant of the lineup featuring 1408 stream processors. This means that there are 22 compute units featured on the card. This is lower than the 24 CU variant we have seen in previous leaks which means that a fully enabled variant might pop in later or yields might have restricted AMD from offering a full 1536 SP graphics card. That is speculative territory for now, so let's just focus on the rest of the specifications.

The Radeon RX features a boost clock of 1845 MHz whereas the Game clock is set at 1717 MHz. The card will feature up to 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM which means that 4 GB GDDR6 variants will also exist. The memory will clock in at 14 Gbps along with a 128-bit bus interface that would provide a total bandwidth of 224 GB/s. The Radeon RX 5500 XT will feature higher core clocks, but the same memory clocks.

The AMD Radeon RX 5500 will also feature the same core config as the Radeon RX 5500 XT with the only change being the 4 GB GDDR6 memory buffer. It will be interesting to see how much lower in price the Radeon RX 5500 will go for, as it would offer far more perf/dollar compared to the XT variant if these specs are indeed correct. The same goes for the mobile variant which comes with the same core configuration but lower clock speeds of 1645 MHz boost and 1448 MHz game clock. Both cards feature a 110W TDP / 150W TBP (Total Board Power) and AMD has recommended a single 8-pin power connector for them to boot.

One of the main reasons due to which AMD is preparing so many Navi 14 SKUs is to compete against NVIDIA's mainstream Turing lineup which was recently announced for desktop PCs. The GeForce GTX 16 SUPER series landed on desktops first but is soon going to make an entry on the notebook front too. At current performance levels, Navi 14 might have a difficult time taking on the TU116 GPU based cards. The first Navi 14 GPU based products including desktop discrete graphics cards are expected to hit market shelves this month, so stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
