Hideo Kojima to Finally Pursue His True Passion and Start Making Movies

Hideo Kojima has had a pretty solid run with his little video-game-making hobby, but it’s time for him to pursue his true passion – movies. He’s famously said his body is 70 percent made of movies, a lot of his games have been more cutscene than actual game, and in recent years he’s been packing his games with movie and TV stars like Kiefer Sutherland, Norman Reedus, and Mads Mikkelsen. Well, now that Kojima is out on his own and free to do whatever he wants, it seems he’s finally going to nut up and make some damn movies. In a recent BBC documentary about the making of Death Stranding (which you can check out below), Kojima reveals his filmmaking plans.

In the future, Kojima Productions will also start making films. If a person can do one thing well, then they should be able to do anything well.

I’m not so sure about that “if I can do one thing well” reasoning. Going from games to movies has not proven to be an easy jump to make. I wonder how Kojima would adapt? Would he be able to constrain his vision and tell a concise 90 or 120 minute story? I kinda have my doubts. But hey, maybe the jump to movies doesn’t have to be this big, dramatic thing – Kojima believes streaming will bring all mediums together soon anyways.

I think within the next few years, gaming will move on to streaming. Movies, dramas and games will all be streamed, and you’ll enjoy them on your iPad or iPhone or a screen anytime, anywhere.

It will certainly be interesting to see what Kojima makes next. The reviews for Death Stranding haven’t been universally positive by any means, but Kojima certainly didn’t compromise his vision. I’m excited to see that vision come to other mediums (I’d read a Kojima book or comic, too).

What do you think? Would you watch a Kojima movie? Or should he stick to what he knows?
