How To Speed Up Your Steam Downloads Significantly

Rizwan Anwer

Steam Christmas Sale is upon us and with the added bonus of the whole Christmas giveaway event it is an even bigger load on steam servers to manage, if you are looking for a way to get the most internet speed so that you can complete the objectives / achievements of a required game but aren't able to download the game in time simply follow this guide to help maximize your download speed in steam, this guide has been a huge help to many people and recently came to my attention for most of the people I have given it to have claimed it has done wonders and others not so much but you can always try your luck :D.

Are you among the people who has a 1 Megabyte or higher internet connection but steam won't give you more than 250 KiloBytes on your download? Want a way to resolve that? Simply follow the steps below and your problem will probably be solved, considering how simple the guide is to follow there really isn't much for you to lose now is there :D.

Step 1.

Go HERE and find the content server with the least load on it (Obviously the smaller the bar the lesser people are on it and more the speed for you)

Step 2.

Once you have identified your desired network to use simply open up steam desktop client (This works for both MAC and PC Steam Clients) and navigate to "View" and choose "Settings" As shown in the screenshot below in your steam client:

Now in settings open the "Downloads + Cloud" Tab and open "Download Region" dropdown box:

Upon choosing your new download region you will be prompted to restart steam to make the settings effective, do so and you should notice a significant boost in performance. Out of 20 people I sent this guide to (Myself included) I saw a huge increase in normal download speed and so did 15 other people making this a 16 / 20 success or 80% success rate, while the remaining 4 didn't see much of an improvement or none at all.

I am NOT making any assurances or guarantees that this WILL SOLVE your download problem but this is merely a recommendation and may or may not work for you.

Step 3. (For help if you need it)

A small thing I want to add is that some servers like Australia are particularly difficult to choose, for instance right now Australia Brisbane is showing no activity but when you go to your steam client you will see a whole bunch of Australia download centers with none of them mentioning their physical location, to remedy this simply look to the left of the graph bar for a name. e.g Australia Brisbane has a single ISP for it by the name of QLD - IX as shown below

Here is how you find the Brisbane server from the steam settings:

And I hope this clears up any other questions you may have and if you feel you need more help feel free to leave a comment below and I will reply as soon as I can, do let me know if this guide worked for you or not :D.
