Apple believes that auto brightness is so good in iOS that users don't need to fiddle with the toggle switch anymore therefore it has hidden it deep inside system settings. Head over to Settings > Display & Brightness right now and the toggle switch is just not there. That's the one place where you'd expect the most obvious thing to be and it is just not there. It's somewhere else, and Apple took this decision with iOS 11 only to be slightly altered with subsequent releases of iOS.

Step 1. Launch the Settings app.
Step 2. Tap on Accessibility.
Step 3. Now tap on Display & Text Size.
Step 4. Scroll all the way down and you'll find the Auto-Brightness toggle switch waiting to be turned off.
If you think this decision by Apple is weird, then try powering down the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max. Simply pressing and holding the sleep/wake button won't do you justice. You really have to fiddle with some button combinations in order to power down an iPhone now. Force restart an iPhone 11? That's an entirely different story.
