How to Calibrate Your Display/Monitor on Windows 10

Whether you have just installed a new monitor or hooking up your old one, calibration plays an important role in optimizing the working of your monitor so you don’t miss out on the details or color accuracy that you paid for. Although the difference might not be phenomenal, it is more than noticeable if you’re someone who focuses on graphic-intensive tasks. Windows 10 features an in-built display calibration wizard that guides you through assessing the metrics of your monitor's settings such as color, brightness, contrast, and more.

Here’s how you can calibrate a monitor or display on Windows 10

1. Open the Start menu and type calibrate display in the search bar. Click on the Calibrate display color option to proceed.
   
2. You will be welcomed by a Display Color Calibration window, simply click on Next after reading the introductory info.
   
3. The first step is to set basic color settings. If it is an external monitor then you need to restore the monitor to its factory default settings via the physical buttons on the monitor itself. If it is a laptop display then click on Next to continue to the next step directly.
   
4. As shown below, the Gamma menu is directed towards adjusting the RGB color values of your display. The ideal setting is when the dots are not visible on the screen as mentioned in the instructions. Click on Next to continue to the next step.
   
5. Simply use the slider to turn down or increase the gamma values until the dots at the center of the shaded spheres are barely visible or not visible at all.
   
6. The invisibility of the dots is not prominent in this screenshot below but as you use the slider, you will notice the difference of the dots fading in real-time. Click on Next to continue once you have successfully found the right spot with the dots least visible.
   
7. Now it’s time to adjust the Brightness and Contrast of your display, you need to access the Brightness and Contrast settings respectively using the controls on your monitor and click Next.
   
8. Click on Next to proceed with the brightness adjustment as you will be given an image and you need to set the brightness with reference to the three images presented on the demo screen.
   
9. Once you have settled on a suitable brightness that fulfills the criteria mentioned before on the demo screen, select Next to proceed.
   
10. Now it's time to adjust the contrast as you will repeat the same process with reference to three new images on the demo screen ranging from Not enough contrast to Good and Too much contrast. Click on Next to continue.
    
11. Use the contrast settings from the settings menu on your monitor to set up the suitable contrast and select Next.
    
12. You need to adjust the color balance by referring to the images on the demo screen as the image needs to be grey and you have to eliminate the red, green, or blue hue from it to successfully tune the color balance. Click on Next to proceed.
    
13. Simply use the Red, Green, and Blue sliders to remove any hue or reflection of these three colors from the grey palette and select Next.
    
14. Now in order to view the before and after effects, select Previous calibration and Current calibration to switch between your older screen calibration and the new one. Click on Finish to complete the process.
