Tutorial

Note: This tutorial assumes that someone else is playing a song or podcast on your HomePod and you want to know what it is.

Step 1. Unlock your iPhone or iPad

Step 2. Make sure you are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your HomePod. You can confirm by going to Settings > Wi-Fi

Step 3. Now pull down from the top right hand corner to bring up Control Center. Those with Touch ID iPhones can swipe up to do the same

Step 4. Tap on audio button in the Now Playing box at the top right hand corner

Step 5. Tap on the the audio source button as highlighted in the screenshot below

Step 6. Find your HomePod in the list of devices and you'll see what's playing on it next to its name

If your iPhone or iPad is the audio source for what is currently playing on the HomePod, then finding out what is being played is even simpler. Just have a look at your Lock Screen or the Now Playing box in Control Center.

That's it, you've now learned what is currently playing on your HomePod, whether it's a song, podcast or even something else. This is something extremely handy and I end up using this feature all the time especially when someone else is blasting tunes on HomePod and I'm the listener without choice.

Obviously, you can always take the Shazam route if you like. After Apple's acquisition of the service, you can Shazam a song and add the track directly to your Apple Music library which is nothing but a convenience.
