The hard disk is a very important part of your computer, and like every component of the computer, it also has to be taken care of. So, if your computer is old, you should always check the health of the disk to ensure that there isn't anything seriously wrong. This tutorial will show you how to check hard disk health on Windows 11 computers.

There are different ways to check how your hard disk is doing. You can use in-built applications or even use third-party applications for the same purpose. I will walk you through different methods, and you can pick whichever is most convenient for you.

WMIC – Windows Management Instrumentation Command

Step-1: Click on the search icon on the taskbar and type cmd. Click Open.

Step-2: Type the following and press Enter:
wmic

Step-3: Now type the following and press Enter:

diskdrive get status

In just a few seconds, you will get the status of your hard disk’s health.

CHKDSK – Check Disk

  1.  Click the search icon and type cmd, and click Run as administrator.
  2.  Type the following command and press Enter:
    Chkdsk /f
  3.  As soon as the command gets executed, you will be asked to set up a scan when the computer restarts next time. Press Y and select Enter.

Hard Disk Manufacturer Tools

Most companies offer hard drive tools that you can use to check the health of your device. If you arent sure what tool you should use, the best way is to check your hard drive’s manufacturer and look up the tool relevant to your disk. Just follow the steps below:

Step-1: Right-click on the Windows icon on the taskbar to open the WinX menu. (You can also use the shortcut keys Win + X to open the menu)

Step-2: Click on Device Manager.

Step-3: Locate Disk drives and click on this option. Copy the drive's name and paste it into your search engine, locate the relevant manufacturer’s tool, and use it to check your device's health.

Third-Party Applications

There are many third-party applications available that are designed for monitoring your hardware devices. If you go online, you will see a lot of applications including HDDScan and Hard Disk Sentinal. You can check the temperature, errors, disk transfer rates, etc., and ensure that your disk performs at optimum levels.
