The Blades of Chaos are Kratos’ trademark, and unlike God of War(2018), they are available from the early stages of the game in GoW Ragnarok. Once again, they prove to be very valuable during combat, as they can be effectively used against larger groups of enemies and work well in most situations. The Blades are tied to a unique Skill Tree, which unlocks new moves and special abilities for these powerful weapons. The Blades of Chaos Skills are divided into Technique, Ranged, and Melee, just like the Leviathan Axe.
New Skills can be unlocked upon spending XP in each specific tab. Higher-level abilities will cost more XP, obtained in combat and every time a quest is completed. For the time being, we will focus on the best starting Skills for the Blades of Chaos.
Vaporize Frost
The Blades of Chaos can deal elemental fire damage to enemies and are more effective against Frosted foes. Mashing the Triangle button lets you charge one Blade of Chaos with this element, so the subsequent attacks with this weapon will be more powerful. With Vaporize Frost unlocked, melee attacks with the Blades bring bonus damage to any Frosted enemy. Combining these two abilities will result in a great combo for the game’s early stages. And if you use your Leviathan Axe to Frost any enemy first and then attack them with the Blades, the result will be even better.
Blazing Explosion I
When you aim at an enemy with L2, you can press R2 to impale them and send a pulse down one of your chains, dealing Burn damage with the Blades of Chaos. If you hold R2, you can throw the other chain toward the target and send that exact pulse down both chains. This will cause a tremendous explosion that will bring massive Burn damage to the foe, also injuring any opponents nearby. It’s an excellent Skill to use when facing multiple enemies, as you will have an easier time against them.
Rushing Chaos
This valuable ability will get in handy multiple times during the whole game. While you are sprinting, you can press R1 to leap forward toward an enemy so that you can hit them multiple times with your Blades of Chaos. This will result in significant damage to the foe. When facing multiple opponents, you can use it to make your way through the crowd of rivals. Rushing Chaos is also an excellent pick against more powerful enemies you will encounter as you progress in the story.
Chaotic Rampage I
Chaotic Rampage is one of the most valuable abilities that can be unlocked early for the Blades of Chaos. While in combat, you can hold R1 to attack a single enemy with multiple hits, dealing massive damage. There is no cooldown for this Skill, so you can use it repeatedly while in a fight. Moreover, if you power up the Blades of Chaos to level 2, you can purchase the Chaos Rampage II ability, which unlocks one additional attack tied to this Skill.
