Intel Preps Xeon W-2500 Mainstream Sapphire Rapids Workstation Refresh Family For 2024, Up To 26 Cores

Earlier this year, Intel introduced its Sapphire Rapids workstation family featuring Xeon W-3400 "High-End" and Xeon W-2400 "Mainstream" CPUs. The blue team now wants to follow up with a refreshed family which will launch next year under the Xeon W-3500 and Xeon W-2500 series. it looks like the specifications of the chips are already finalized with YuuKi_AnS revealing the specs sheet.

Just like this year's lineup, the Intel Xeon W-2500 "Sapphire Rapids" refresh CPUs will adopt the same Golden Cove P-Core architecture and feature support on the existing LGA-4677 socket on various W790 motherboards. The lineup has a total of seven SKUs which range from 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 22, and 26 core models.

The top SKU is the Intel Xeon W7-2595X which features 26 cores & 52 threads which is two more cores and 4 extra threads than the current flagship, the Xeon W7-2495X with 24 cores and a total of 48 threads. The chip features a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a boost clock of 4.8 GHz while packing 48.75 MB of L3 cache and support for DDR5-4800 (4-Channel) memory. The chip is configured at a 250W TDP which is 25W higher than its predecessor. All chips will feature 64 PCIe Gen 5 lanes and you can check out the rest of the SKUs in the following table:

The Xeon W-2500 Refresh looks slightly better in the update department versus the 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh since it not only offers more cores and threads across all SKUs but also gets a clock speed bump. All SKUs feature two extra cores/threads over their predecessors but also adopt higher TDPs.

According to a previous rumor, the Intel Xeon W-3500 and Xeon W-2500 Sapphire Rapids refresh family for workstations is expected to launch in early 2024. We might get to hear about it during Intel's CES 2024 presentation though the company generally doesn't make a lot of noise when it comes to refreshes as we have seen with the 14th Gen Raptor Lake launch. The lineup will tackle AMD's Threadripper 7000 in the mainstream workstation category which mainly includes 12, 16 & 24 core options.

If Intel were to retain the same prices for the Xeon W-2500 CPUs as the Xeon W-2400, then we would get the 12-core Xeon W-2545 around $839 US and the 18-core Xeon W-2565X around $1389 US. The 26-core flagship should retail for around $2189 US which should be cheaper than the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7965WX which retails at $2649 US but higher priced than the DIY Threadripper 7960X which retails at $1499 US. It will be interesting to see how Intel prices its new Xeon lineup but AMD definitely has a big efficiency and multi-threaded advantage with its Zen 4 architecture & Chipzilla will have to keep that in mind when releasing the refreshed lineup.
