Apex Legends Season 20, entitled “Breakout,” launches next week, and EA and developer Respawn/Respawn Vancouver have detailed what the update will include. Players won’t be getting a new Legend this time around, but in its place Respawn is promising a major shakeup to core gameplay in the form of a new in-game progression system. Each Legend will be able to unlock four upgrades throughout the course of a match, each of which will either augment existing abilities or even grant completely new abilities. As part of this change, armor upgrades will now be tied to the in-game progression system, rather being lootable items. In addition to the new in-game progression system, a new Mixtape map, Thunderdome, is on the way. Here’s how Respawn describes it…
“New to Mixtape is Thunderdome, a.k.a. the deadliest entertainment venue on the Frontier. Modernized with killer upgrades to make Legends known across the Outlands and beyond, players can hit the Mixtape Playlist for Gun Run, Team Deathmatch and Control in new POIs.”
Of course, some more limited-time modes are also on the way, including Straight Shot, a 30-play battle royale that gets you into the action quicker.
“Straight Shot is a fast-paced limited-time mode where 10 squads drop into predetermined POIs, next to fully-kitted guns and enemy squads ready for action. Speeding up the battle are faster ring rounds, no Jumpmasters, a smaller map and the ability to re-queue without ever hitting the lobby.”
Of course, there will be the usual battle passes and new cosmetics, and a number of Legends will be made available for free this season, which you can then unlock permanently by completing challenges – these in include Fuse, Seer, Rampart, Mad Maggie, Loba, and Valkyrie. And as a final bonus, Respawn is promising a new 120fps mode is being added to the game for those playing on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Apex Legends: Breakout launches on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Switch on February 13.
