How To: Jailbreak iOS 6 on iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G And iPhone 3GS

Faheem Saeed

Apple publicly released their 6th generation of iOS almost a month ago and soon after its release, jailbreak community was waiting for an official iOS 6 untethered jailbreak. Though iPhone Dev Team's redsn0w jailbreaking tool had the ability to jailbreak iOS 6 on A4 devices but it was not official and users had to install Cydia manually on their jailbroken iOS 6 devices. Earlier today, iPhone Dev team released an updated version of redsn0w which now fully supports iOS 6 jailbreak on A4 and prior iOS devices.

Redsn0w 0.9.15b1 now fully supports iOS 6 jailbreak and it WILL automatically install Cydia on your jailbroken A4 and prior iOS devices. Redsn0w 0.9.15b1 comes packed with tons of new features but we will just focus on jailbreaking for the sake of this guide but you will get to see more guides on Wccftech which will involve redsn0w's new features.

Before we start the jailbreaking process there are couple of things which you should know:

  • This is a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6 which means that you have to connect your iPhone or iPod touch with a computer to boot it in a jailbroken state every time you restart your device.
  • iPhone 5 is still not supported by redsn0w or any other jailbreaking tool.
  • If you're an unlocker stay far far away from iOS 6.

This iOS 6 jailbreak guide will work for following iOS devices:

  • iPhone 4 (Tethered)
  • iPhone 3GS (Untethered for old bootrom only)
  • iPod touch 4G (Tethered)

Step 1: Make sure that your iPhone or iPod touch is running iOS 6

Step 2: Download redsn0w 0.9.15b1 for Windows and Mac from the links given below

Step 3: Run redsn0w 0.9.15b1 on your computer and connect your iPhone

Step 4: Turn off your iPhone and click on "Jailbreak" button

Step 5: Redsn0w will now guide you to put your iPhone in DFU (black screen) mode, follow the instruction on screen

Step 6: Once you're in DFU mode, redsn0w will automatically detect your iPhone or iPod touch and start fetching the necessary files for jailbreaking iOS 6

Step 7: Check "Install Cydia" on redsn0w and clicked "Next"

Step 8: Redsn0w will now start jailbreaking your iOS devices running iOS 6. Sit back, relax and grab a cup of coffee if you feel like.

Step 9: You phone will restart but stock application won't work because you need to boot it in tethered mode.

How To Boot iOS 6 In Tethered Mode:

Step 1: Run redsn0w 0.9.15b1, connect your iPhone to your computer and turn if off.

Step 2: Click "Extras" in redsn0w and then click "Just Boot"

Step 3: Follow the instructions on your screen to put your iPhone in DFU mode

Step 4: Once you're in DFU mode, redsn0w will automatically detect your device and will start booting it in tethered mode

You iPhone will now boot up normally and you will see Cydia icon on your SpringBoard (Home Screen).
