Intel unveiled their new Bay Trail mobility platform at IDF13 with a dozen of devices featuring the new 22nm core architecture. It looks like Bay Trail, in addition to the tablet, mobile and notebook market would also be headed to desktop PCs in future NUC systems by Intel.

Intel Preparing Low Cost Bay Trail Powered NUC Systems

Hexus managed to grab sight of a chart detailing one such NUC systems which is based off the 22nm Atom core. The Bay Trail-M powered NUC is a preliminary design for now and is planned for launched in Q1 2014. This gives Intel enough time to bring out cost effective compact PCs that might even compete against AMD's own Kabini NUCs mentioned weeks ago:

“We are working with partners on Kabini[-based] [4”x4”] design,” said Peter Amos, a public relations manager at AMD. via Xbitlabs

Intel isn't planning to ship the new NUC systems for the mainstream market, rather they would be putting focus towards the entry-level desktop usage environments such as home entertainment PCs, Communication, general office usage, etc. The specifications include an Dual-Core Bay Trail-M, Intel Celeron N2810 SOC (System on chip) featuring a core clock of 2.0 GHz and a graphics clock of 756 MHz operating at a TDP of 7.5W. The rated power consumption is one key points of the Bay Trail powered NUC systems to compete against Kabini systems arriving in the market.

Memory support includes an DDR3L SODIMM slot capable to hold a maximum of 8 GB capacity while storage includes a single SATA port. External connectivity options include power button (LED/HDD LED), 1 USB 3.0 port, IR receiver sensor, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 2 in 1 microphone/headphone jack, 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN jack, HDMI port, DC power jack. Internal connectivity features an Intel Wireless N135 module with 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. Due to the 7.5W TDP, the NUC still sticks with an active fan heatsink for cooling unlike the next-generation Broadwell powered SOCs which will end up with fanless designs due to their lower wattage.

At the moment, only one Bay trail powered NUC systems is planned to be introduced in the market in Q1 2014 which would support Windows 8.1/8/7, Linux and Android OS (TBD Q2 2014). The BOXDN2810FYKH0 would be available for a price of $139 US. On a side note, Intel also has planned to introduce their Haswell powered NUCs later this year, we will have an article on them shortly.
