The latest Nexus flagship has just received the KitKat 4.4.1 update. As shared with you before, a rumor was suggesting this latest update might cure Nexus 5's camera issues. Prerequisites to root and update Nexus 5 to Android 4.4.1 KitKat KOT49E:

  • Create a backup of all important data in your Galaxy device.
  • Download and install USB drivers for Galaxy Nexus in your computer.
  • Enable USB debugging option by pressing Menu > Settings > Applications. Navigate and tap on Developer Options to ensure that USB Debugging is enabled.
  • If you are going to root, make sure to have a custom recovery tool like CWM.
  • Ensure that your Nexus 5 carries more than 70% of charge.

How to root and update Nexus 5 to Android 4.4.1 KOT49E OTA:

Required files: download Android SDK for Nexus 5; also download KitKat KOT49E OTA update.  Odin 3.07 in your PC. Extract the firmware file and

  • Power off and reboot your Nexus 5 in Bootloader mode by pressing and holding Volume Down and Power buttons. Use the Volume key to highlight Recovery Mode and use Power key to select it.
  • When you see the Android bot on screen, press Power and Volume Down buttons to boot your Nexus 5 into recovery mode.
  • Once in recovery mode, connect your device with your computer.
  • Highlight apply update from ADB using the volume keys and select it.
  • In the folder where you have downloaded the official KitKat Android 4.4.1 update, press shift and right click on an empty space to bring up the popup; select Open Command Prompt Here.
  • In the command prompt, type this:
    • adb sideload 7ed504f678cea49ecf0974e8cd956e2974e3f943.signed-hammerhead-KOT49E-from-KRT16M.7ed504f6.zip
  • This will start the update process. When done successfully, you will be prompted to reboot system now.

Root Nexus 5 Android 4.4.1 KitKat:

Required: Make sure you have all your data backed up as unlocking the bootloader wipes the data out. Download SuperSU package.

  1. Connect your Nexus 5 to your PC using USB cable. Copy the downloaded file on your device's memory.
  2. Disconnect and power off your Nexus 5.
  3. Boot in to recovery: use Volume down and Power buttons simultaneously until you see the bootloader screen. As before, use the Volume keys to highlight Recovery Mode and select it.
  4. In CWM recovery mode, select Install zip from sdcard and choose zip from sdcard. Locate the SuperSu file and start the rooting process.
  5. When done, tap on Reboot System Now to reboot your Nexus 5!

Your Nexus 5 is now successfully rooted!
