There are several tricks which can make sure your device runs Apple's latest operating system smoothly and without any hassles.

A trick to improve iOS 8 performance on the iPhone 4S is turning off animation and other pleasing display effects on your iPhone 4S. One needless hurdle to performance that you can remove is the motion effect for app icons and other features in iOS 8. Using your device's gyro sensors and accelerometer, the feature allows neat 3D effects on the home screen.

However it also ends up useful battery and performance resources. So to turn this feature off, simply go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and turn the switch on. Another display feature that you can turn off to save processor resources is the transparency effect for control panel or the keyboard.

While it's another aesthetically pleasing feature in iOS 8, it also ends up hogging processor power. So to turn off transparency, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast > Reduce Transparency. After these steps you still find that your iPhone 4S is not working the way you'd like it too, there are two more simple steps that you can take.

Try resetting your phone's settings. This won't cause any data or app loss but will ensure that any unnecessary problems which might have been created after upgrading to iOS 8 are removed. Go to General > Reset > Reset All Settings to reset your device.

Another measure which will further ensure that any unnecessary bugs created with an iOS 8 upgrade are eliminated on your iPhone 4S is restoring the device to it's factory settings. This will wipe out any and all data on your device and will return to it's post factory manufacturing settings. However do make sure that you back your device up before resetting it to factory settings. To reset your iPhone 4S to factory settings, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings and Content.
