The new Spotlight in OS X Yosemite brings in some new features like unit conversion and place suggestions. Spotlight search brings you a ton of content types. These content types include applications, files, folders, messages, definitions, places, and much more. To open Spotlight in OS X Yosemite,
- Click the search icon at the top right of the screen; or
- Press ⌘ + Space.
When the Spotlight search bar appears, type in your query and Spotlight will fetch some of the most relevant results based on your query. Search results in Spotlight also include a preview in the right side panel for the files, messages, mails, and any other file types.
If you intend to customize what types of content should Spotlight search for,
- Go to System Preferences > Spotlight
- Uncheck the types you don't want Spotlight to show or change their priority by working around the order.
