Chainfire has already managed to root Android Lollipop running on Nexus 9. Factory images for Android 5.0 Lollipop were released only a few hours ago and Chainfire has certainly acted fast. While the root solution may not be an easy feat for a normal user to take on, experienced users will find it useful. Chainfire has also managed to create a 64-bit superuser binary along with the Nexus 9 root solution.

Reading the "root by Chainfire" you might have naturally expected to get the CF-Auto root method where we simply need to select a file to achieve root. However, considering the device is quite new and more importantly, the OS build is brand new, the simple way of rooting is not yet possible. You should also keep in mind that there is no custom recovery for HTC Nexus 9 as yet. CF-Auto root framework would need to be patched to work with 64-bit devices, which means Nexus 9 root will be achieved using ADB and Fastboot commands for now.
Using ADB and Fastboot for difficult isn't very difficult for rooting any way, but you should consider waiting for CF-Auto Root in case you have little or no experience with rooting. Here are the simple steps as shared by Chainfire:
- enable oem unlocking in Android's developer options
- fastboot oem unlock
- fastboot boot inject.img
- fastboot flash boot patched.img
Chainfire has promised that he will start updating the CF-Auto root tool for the all new Android lollipop which means wait for the easier solution might not take that long. In any case, there would probably be some bugs and lack of app support for the latest OS build. Give it some days and you will get both the bug-free root solution, custom recovery and other such tools and apps.
