The IP was previously a comic, released in the late 1990's by Joe Madureira. Talking to Polygon, the creator explained some details regarding Battle Chasers, without revealing too much.

Battle Chasers is an adventure RPG with three controllable characters

They said that the game is shaping up to be an adventure RPG, with three controllable characters, Calibretto, Garrison and Gully. Battle Chasers will be based on the comic of the late 90's which will be rebooted alongside the game. The game will be created by Madureira’s Airship Syndicate studio which was formed after the collapse of THQ. Stefanelli went to talk about the game and explain its differences from Darksiders:

“Even though the game mechanically is going to be very different from Darksiders, I think we’re still really going to be doing everything we can to make sure that the dungeon exploration side of the game is soaked with lots of fun adventurous elements.”

"I've always wanted to do an animated series, possibly, so there's a couple of different options that we're pursuing for bringing the franchise back in a big way," says Madureira.

Air Syndicate is currently looking for funding for Battle Chasers, hasn't decided whether that will be from an investor, a publisher or Kickstarter.

"We're going to sort of let fate decide for us exactly how we should best pay for the game," says Stefanelli.

Regarding the comic, there is no publisher yet or a specific release date, but madureira mentions that he sees the franchise evolve, as his tastes have evolved.

"I partially just want to update it, I think it's going to get a visual overhaul too. My art style and storytelling style, everything's sort of changed and evolved over the years."

Madureira sees the comic running in three-issue arcs. The first of those will follow the story from where it was left off at 2001, so people will stop asking about it, and then tie-in with the game.

Airship Syndicate did not announce a timeframe of release for neither the game or the comic, as they are both in early stages. Check out the gallery above for a taste of the concept art for the game. Regardless of how the funding turns out, Battle Chasers could potentially prove a quite interesting project, as Madureira is a visionary, and a very talented creator. The 1990's comic featured some very unique and stylised artwork and designs, that could translate exceptionally well in a game. Darksiders was a very good game, and Darksiders II, an even better one, the potential for Battle Chasers, becoming a great adventure RPG are looking good indeed.
