A fresh report indicates that Nvidia will be showcasing its own VR head mounted display at GDC next week. The company will also be hosting a talk about marrying Nvidia technologies with VR to improve the overall experience.

nvidia made to gameWe covered an interesting development two days ago which indicates that the green team is working towards unveiling a new gaming platform for the first time at GDC. The new platform is still unknown, possibilities include an android gaming device that employs the company's new Tegra X1 mobile chip. Although the announcement could also entail the announcement of the company's new VR headset.

According to vrfocus.com the new virtual reality head mounted display is being developed by the same team that headed the development of Nvidia's Shield handheld gaming device a few years back. The new VR device is rumored to be dubbed Titan VR. It seems everything that Nvidia's rumored to be working on these days has the word "Titan" somehow involved in its name.

VRFocus has learned from multiple sources that the graphics processing unit (GPU) manufacturer will be revealing its very own kit, possibly named Titan VR. The product is being created by the team behind Nvidia’s SHIELD tablet. No other details on the device have been revealed at this time, although VR fans will recall that the company is hosting a GDC session titled ‘VR Direct: How NVIDIA Technology Is Improving the VR Experience’ on 4th March at 14:00 PST. This could well be where the news is made official.

We've heard that the red team is working on VR too and has just recently hired more veteran VR developers. However according to industry sources, AMD isn't interested in creating its own VR headset and would rather work closely with Oculus instead. AMD is also hosting its own VR talk at GDC which will be centered around low latency rendering, an essential element in the virtual reality environment.

Interest from both GPU makers is of paramount importance to drive virtual reality forward. Intense graphics processing is required for an adequately good user experience in VR. And as the resolutions grow ever larger and the games ever more complex, driving a low latency gaming experience is going to require a massive amount of GPU horsepower. And this is where both Nvidia and AMD will play a major role.

VR is a very exciting technology and with every passing year it has been garnering more attention and a bigger following. It's evolving rapidly thanks to its close alignment with the development cycle of mobile phones. It'll take more time for the technology to mature both on the hardware and software fronts for it to be accessible to the average user but with the backing of giants such as Facebook it'll undoubtedly get there soon enough.
