Super Mario 64 in a Browser? Yes Please!

Jeff Williams

Someone has done something incredible, and all part of a project to show off something else they've created too. Roystan Ross has recreated the first Super Mario 64 level with the Unity engine and you can even play it in your browser window.

If you've nothing to do this weekend, why not go poke around on the first level of Super Mario 64 in your browser?

Roystan Ross made this gorgeous HD remake of the first level of Super Mario 64 as part of a way to show off his Super Character Controller project. Using the Unity engine he was able to remaster it to include all the details you would expect, though with the liberty taken to swap out a few elements.

Demonstration project for the Super Character Controller, a recreation of Super Mario 64’s first level, Bob-Omb Battlefield. Everything is just as you remember, except some really minor stuff that nobody cared about like red coins or the Wing Cap or the Big Bob-omb. Replacing them are crowd pleasers like giant springs and coin blocks.

But what better way to spend your weekend could possibly exist than running around through the first stage and stomping on some goombas? Be cautious, though, as it might bring back some feel good memories from your past. It's a great remake that's even more incredible because you can play it in your browser (not bowser, browser). Of course there is also a downloadable version available as well.

Interestingly, there is support for all major gamepads that you might want to connect to it, like the Xbox gamepads and the PlayStation gamepads. He mentions that if there are indeed issues encountered with any controllers to just let him know.

While Roystan Ross doesn't plan on developing his project any further than this, what he has created is quite nice indeed. And he's sharing it with the world as well. So kudos to him for making such a splendid and fun web game, something far better than the traditional web based games we're used to on Facebook and the like.
