Final Fantasy XIV Has More Subscribers Now Than You Might Think, Almost 5 Million

On the fourth of July at the Japan Expo, The producer for Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida, announced that there are 5 million total subscribers to their game over the 21 months that it's been out.

Final Fantasy XIV has had a steady influx of subscribers since the beginning, now at around 5 million total.

Final Fantasy XIV didn't quite have the reception that was expected back in 2010 when it was first released. The general feeling was that it was incomplete when released, so full of bugs that it might even have been the worst video game released of all time.

That changed with the re-imagining and refinement that came from A Realm Reborn helped to launch what has become a stellar MMORPG experience, one that rivals World of Warcraft and, Star Wars: The Old Republic and others with a vast character-based story. Now that's translated into a surprising 5 million subscribers.

This is 1 million more than Final Fantasy XIV had in February 2015 and significant amount more than the paltry 2.5 million total subscribers from February 2014. That's a significant amount of players for a subscriber only online game. This means that the content that has been provided since the original has been compelling enough to actually bring people not originally interested into the game.

Thus far Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward has done surprisingly well, garnering a good reception from the community. It serves to refocus the gameplay on providing an incredibly bold, yet classically Final Fantasy narrative. The new jobs and even the flying are just icing on a very delicious cake.

If you haven't taken a look at Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward yet, and are a true Final Fantasy and an MMORPG fan, then you likely will enjoy it. If, however, you're on the fence about it, then wait for a free weekend. As far as MMORPG's go, Final Fantasy XIV isn't for everyone. It's still far better than it was, with 5 million subscribers enjoying the new content.
