With Qualcomm’s flagship SoC Snapdragon 820 given an announcement date of August 11, looks like we have got some more details on the upcoming chipset that will make you feel good about upgrading your existing high-end smartphone. Snapdragon 820 was earlier reported to suffer from the same overheating issues as Snapdragon 810, but an analyst later refuted these claims. Now, according to our findings, Snapdragon 820 is not only a powerhouse of a chipset, but also a very efficient one, as you will see when you read on.
Snapdragon 820 Features The Model Name MSM8996 And Sports Four Hydra Cores, Not Kryo Ones
According to information posted on Chinese analyst Pan Jiutang’s Weibo account, we now know that Snapdragon 820 is not going to feature the company’s Kryo cores, but Hydra ones instead. To remind you, Qualcomm already had plans to release ARM based server processors which were called Hydra to challenge Intel’s supremacy in the server market. These cores are going to found in Snapdragon 820, which has been processed under Samsung’s 14 nm FinFET process.
Moving on, the upcoming chipset is not going to feature an octa-core processor, but a quad-core one, indicating that Qualcomm is going back to the same roots where it incorporated four Krait cores in its previous generation Snapdragon chipsets. Coming to the performance that you can expect from Snapdragon 820, Adreno 530 present inside it will be able to deliver up to 40 percent of that performance, coupled with 30 percent better power efficiency compared to Snapdragon 810, which is a huge sigh of relief. The last thing that we need is another overheating SoC with thermal throttling events kicking in.
Here Are The Other Goodies Of Snapdragon 820
The upcoming chipset is not just to deliver on the performance side of things. Snapdragon 820 is also loaded with other goodies, ranging from dual-channel, LPDDR4 memory support (up to a speed of 1866 MHz). Additionally, the chipset will also provide support for a 28 MP camera sensor. One of the biggest jumps concerning video recording is that users will be able to record 4K videos at a steady 60 FPS, which is simply phenomenal. Though our earlier report of iPhone 6s states that the device’s rear camera sensor will be able to record 4K videos at 240 FPS, the Snapdragon 820’s upgrade is still a worthy one in our books.
As for when we can see Snapdragon 820 in action, sadly, while the announcement date is said to be August 11, the SoC will not be present in smartphones until Q1, 2016. Regardless, if Qualcomm has finally been able to learn its lesson from Snapdragon 810’s abysmal run, then Snapdragon 820 is already a clear winner in our eyes.
