AMD Announces Latest GCN Based Embedded Radeon Lineup – Radeon E8950 MXM With Full Tonga GPU at 95W

AMD has announced their latest GCN powered Embedded Radeon lineup which will be featured inside the new boards geared towards embedded market solutions. The embedded market, although not much talked about in the graphics market has several applications which can use the compute performance of Radeon for low power and high-performance systems. The key market segments which will be the focus of the new GPUs will include medical, client, digital gaming/signage, embedded gaming and industrial controls.

AMD Embedded Radeon Lineup Announced - Radeon E8950 MXM Will Full Tonga GPU at 95W

Last year, AMD released a new roadmap to provide an update on their current and future plans for the embedded market. AMD has a range of products in the embedded market ranging from CPUs, SOCs and discrete graphics. The roadmap mentioned that AMD will have a new generation 10*** series Radeon line planned for launch in 2015-2016 but turns out AMD will stick to their current 8*** naming scheme for the embedded market and launch a handful of new products. A lot has changed with AMD in the last year so changes are to be expected to the roadmap but there are also some updates which are worth sharing since AMD's Embedded lineup does get new updates.

The AMD Embedded Radeon lineup will exist in three form factors that will consist of PCI-Express board, MXM (Mobile PCI-Express Module) and MCM (Multi-Chip Module) configurations. Each form factor is geared towards different market segments and have their own benefits offering high-performance, lower power draw, custom configurations, etc. The new Radeon lineup includes the Embedded Radeon E8950, Embedded Radeon E8870, Embedded Radeon E8860 and Embedded Radeon R6465.

AMD Embedded Radeon E8950

The Embedded Radeon E8950 is an MXM form factor card that is based on the Tonga GPU. The card features the full Tonga GPU with 32 Compute units that include 2048 stream processors, 128 texture mapping unit and 32 raster operation units. The card packs 8 GB of GDDR5 memory running along a 256-bit bus interface. The card has a peak performance of 3 TFLOPs (FP32) and has a power consumption of 95W. The main focus for the card is towards GPGPU and compute solutions in medical and aerospace instruments. The card has a 3 years planned longevity period which is good enough though 2 years shorter than what's being offered on the other products. On the bright side, this means that AMD will be planning replace this part really soon with a higher performance product.

AMD Embedded Radeon E8870

The Embedded Radeon E8870 is available in both MXM and PCI-Express full length form factor. The card is based on the Bonaire Pro GPU core that features 12 Compute units that include 768 stream, 48 TMUs, 16 Raster operation units. The card packs 4 GB of GDDR5 memory running along a 128-bit bus interface and has peak performance of 1.5 TFLOPs (FP32). The card can power up to 6 displays and has a power consumption of 75W.

AMD Embedded Radeon E8860

The Embedded Radeon E8860 is available in MXM, MCM and PCI-Express full length form factor. The card is based on the Cape Verde GPU core that features 10 Compute units that include 640 stream, 40 TMUs, 16 Raster operation units. The card packs 2 GB of GDDR5 memory running along a 128-bit bus interface and has peak performance of 1.5 TFLOPs (FP32). The card can power up to 6 displays and has a power consumption up to 37W (Will be lower on MCM and MXM models).

AMD Embedded Radeon E6465

The Embedded Radeon E6465 although a new entrant to the embedded family is actually based on the old VLIW4 based Caicos GPU. The old 40nm architecture means that this card will have poor efficiency compared to the GCN based parts. The card is available in all three form factors and packs only two compute units with 128 stream processors. The card packs 2 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide bus, has a total power consumption of up to 20W and can run four displays at once.
