Visceral’s Star Wars Title To Be A 3rd Person Open-World RPG Featuring Heroes

Aernout van de Velde

If recent job listings from EA Visceral are to be believed, Visceral's Star Wars Project will be a 3rd person, open-world RPG title, featuring Hero's, boss encounters and more.

Visceral is currently hard at work on their secret Star Wars project, which is overseen by former Ubisoft producer, Jade Raymond, and Uncharted writer Amy Hennig. While Hennig is now the creative director at Visceral, Raymond founded her own studio, Motive Studio, and helps out Hennig with the Star Wars project.

Visceral's Star Wars project was confirmed to be in production back in 2013, but a release date for the 'secret' Star Wars project, hasn't been announced. It is said the game will feature a story independent from the already established Star Wars storyline. Apart from this, not much details have been released about the game.

Until now perhaps, if some recent job listings at EA Visceral are to be believed. The studio posted a total of 3 job vacancies over the past two weeks, which might well have revealed some juicy info on Visceral's upcoming game.

Visceral Games creates top quality games that push the boundaries of action entertainment. We have over a decade of experience at delivering high-intensity action gaming experiences. As part of a worldwide group of EA studios, we have the stability and backing of a large company combined with the agility and fun culture of small studios and the mandate to make original IP. We are focused on creativity, polish, and shipping games that millions love as well as building healthy teams and culture. Come join an AAA-quality studio focused on making AAA-quality games!

The most interesting vacancy is a job position for a Senior Game Designer at the studio. A short headline from the job listing:

Fight Alien Invaders. Shoot a reverse double-pump slam. Earn street racing cred!

Yup - it’s the coolest job on the planet!

We've highlighted some of the interesting parts of the listing below.

THE CHALLENGE AHEAD:

BRING YOUR SYSTEM GAME DESIGN SKILLS AND SAVVY AND YOUR LOVE OF STAR WARS TO VISCERAL GAMES, EMBRACING AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROJECT VISION IN AREAS OF HERO CONTROL/MECHANICS, AI BEHAVIORS, COMBAT/WEAPONS, CLASS DESIGN, SKILLS/PROGRESSION, ENEMY DESIGN, STORY AND BOSS ENCOUNTERS.

Who you are:

You have solid experience in the games industry working as a systems designer, shipping at least two titles.

Experience working on 3rd person action/adventure games, demonstrating major contributions in the areas of hero control schemes, enemy design, navigation mechanics, and combat.

Experience working with a game engine and using scripting tools to assemble heroes, enemies, AI, and interactive objects by collecting and implementing animations, models, audio, and effects into one complete system.

Extensive understanding of the systems design process including motion models, weapons tuning and feel, enemy concept and design, tools/upgrades, economy, balance, testing, etc.

This description basically confirms that Visceral is working on some sort of open-world RPG. Also Heroes are mentioned in a 3rd person action-adventure setting.

Visceral is also looking for a senior character artist, which focuses on "on character sculpting and modeling for a Star Wars title". The artist will create "a large number of diverse characters and will be working alongside Motive and Visceral Studio designers, artists, animators and engineers to create a cast of highly detailed characters".

Last but not least, is the vacancy for a Senior Technical Animator to "join a project at the earliest stage and make an impact". Whether this vacancy is for Visceral's Star Wars game, is unknown. Since development op the project began back in 2013, and the job mentions "a project at the earliest stage", I'm confused whether it is or not.

Are you excited for Visceral's upcoming Star Wars project? It sure does feel like Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic in some way.
