After running into some throttling issues with the Snapdragon 810 last year, Qualcomm's got quite the bar to overcome this year with the Snapdragon 820. The company seems eager to deliver however, as the 820 will be highly redesigned when compared to the 810, with the return of the company's favored Krait architecture. Today, some more benchmarks of the Snapdragon 820 have surfaced so lets take a look at where Qualcomm should be expected to stand.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 And Adreno 530 Benchmarks Surface Showing Impressive Scores
When it comes to mobile GPUs, Qualcomm's well known for its prowess throughout the mobile world. Even though the Snapdragon 810 under-performed quite seriously last year, its GPU still remained at the top of mobile GPUs all around, and by the look of things today, the Adreno 530 will be following suit as well.
Some scores have surfaced on the benchmark database GeekBench, and courtesy of them we can see what to expect from both the Snapdragon 820 and the Adreno 530 this year. Taking a look at the scores above, we see that in 1080p T-Rex and Manhattan off-screen the Adreno 530 manages to score 48 and 91 FPS respectively, which is quite impressive when compared against existing offerings in the market.
Taking a look at the Manhattan scores above, the Adreno 530 manages to beat nearly every device out there in terms of scores and ties up with Google's Pixel C; which comes with Nvidia's Tegra X1 on board. While that should be impressive in its own accord, the Adreno 530 beats every other mobile GPU out there, including its predecessor and ARM's Mali series offerings.
If today's scores do turn out to be correct then 2016 should prove to be a strong year for Qualcomm, particularly if the company manages to deliver on the Snapdragon 820 and its Kryo cores as well. Qualcomm's been talking quite a lot about the Snapdragon 820 so far, and the processor is expected to come with four Kryo cores on board.
These, coupled with its DSP and the GPU will be more tightly integrated than their predecessors and Qualcomm hopes this will lend the Snapdragon 820 significant power and performance benefits. The Snapdragon 820 is expected to debut with the Samsung Galaxy S7 this February so we'll find out where the processor stands soon enough.
