Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Specifications, Features, Price And More

Ramish Zafar

After a busy couple of months, its finally time for us to take an official look at the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. With its different approach on the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge last year, the Korean manufacturing giant managed to shift gears and become a more strong player in the global smartphone market.

While Samsung's diverse presence in the mobile sphere has been long established, final quarters of 2014 saw the Korean manufacturing giant suffer from a loss of shareholder confidence, which was followed by a vastly redesigned Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

That being said, today's launch of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge doesn't change things as significantly; something which has been predicted by the rumor mill for sometime. But we do get several key changes and features on board, which should keep users interested for another flagship cycle.

Design

Starting from the design details of Samsung's larger variant of the Galaxy S7, we see that the overall device structure stays constant. The device retains an all metal unibody, coupled with two curving screen sides that will now also be aided with the functionality of always-on display.

Fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S7 Edge is placed at the bottom and now covers more area. The bottom sees a similar arrangement of the USB/earphone ports and a speaker grille. Overall dimensions stand at 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7mm, marking for a 0.7mm increase from last year. The larger battery should be the one to account for this change.

Samsung's chosen to keep the overall simplistic and minimalist touch alive on this year's Galaxy flagship smartphone devices as well. In fact, a good addition to this year's design specifications is the reduction of the rear camera bump. In fact, the rear camera of the device receives significant attention, as you'll be able to see below.

Another design feature that sees a change on the device that has changed is its overall ergonomics. Slight changes around the corners should make the Galaxy S7 Edge much more easier to hold, which should come as a blessing as the screen size has gone up by 0.4 inches this time around. Oh and the Galaxy S7 Edge's also water resistant as well, so you'd be motivated to play around with the device a little bit.

Performance

On board the device is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, which has taken the spotlight this year for flagship smartphone processors. Much of this is due to the throttling issues on the Snapdragon 810, which led to the significant rise in popularity of the Exynos 7422.

With its launch, the Galaxy S7 Edge promises to deliver 30.4% improved processor and an impressive 63.9% improvement over the Galaxy S6 Edge's processor. The Snapdragon 820 comes with 2 sets of dual Kryo cores on board, clocked at 1.6 and 2.1GHz respectively. Following this, its expected this year that the processor will deliver a 30% performance and 60%  GPU improvements over its predecessor.

Alongside the Snapdragon 820, the Galaxy S7 Edge also comes with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM combined with . These, coupled with a 3600mAh battery should prove sufficient for a lot of users. That's an exact 1000mAh increase over the S6 Edge and should really take some heavy usage to drain. Given the Snapdragon 820 and a screen resolution of 2560x1440, we're sure users will find ways to test this to the limit as well.

Camera

Once again, camera details on the Galaxy S7 Edge received special focus for Samsung. The rear camera for the Galaxy S7 Edge stands at an aperture size of f/1.7 and will have 30% larger pixels than the iPhone 6s Plus. Directly naming Apple's devices at its launch events haven't been a rare occurrence for Samsung, with the Galaxy S6 Edge's launch last year seeing similar instances.

Resolution for the rear camera stands at 12MP combined with Dual Pixel OIS on board. This is something which made an appearance on the rumor mill a while back as well, with Samsung long expected to take a different approach with the device's camera this time around. The Dual Pixel sensor should use 100% pixels for focusing.

The front camera comes with a similar f/1.7 lens with a resolution of 5MP. The Galaxy S7 Edge's focus this time round seems to be on the rear camera, which certainly looks to be able to stand its ground against other competitors. The wider f/1.7 aperture should also allow for 95% increased inflow of light, something that will definitely have its impact in low light scenarios.

Conclusion

Has the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge changed things dramatically? No. But the launch of the smartphone marks a new approach for devices in the Android world overall; with manufacturers now looking to make big changes after considerable thought. Nevertheless, hardware and general performance specifications receive the usual attention, with the Galaxy S7 Edge seeing focused attention towards battery and camera.

If you're looking for a smartphone upgrade this year, especially from the Galaxy S6 Edge, the S7 Edge should be a strong contender. But what's going to be more interesting to note is Samsung's approach next year, since we might very well see a vastly different successor to today's device.

It all boils down to personal preference at the end, and the Galaxy S7 Edge will become available for sale starting March 11th. Pre-orders begin from February 23rd, with the device to cost $799 - something which should influence quite a few Android users out there. Thoughts?
