Android N version number has been leaked by Samsung on its developer portal website. Can you guess what it might be?

Android N is more of an evolutionary release, and doesn't bring with it much to the table, especially if you load the developer preview onto a supported devices and peek at the changes which Google has packed within. If that's actually the case, the version number should be, let's assume, Android 6.2, right? Nope. According to the Samsung developer website, Android N is version 7.0, despite not being a major release.

Android N Is Version 7.0, According To Samsung

The revelation comes from the changelog of Samsung's MultiWindow SDK, and it reads as follows:

This version has been released with Android N(7.0) compatibility.

While the version number is nothing to get excited about really, general users like us are more interested in what Android N will end up being called. If the murmurs on the Internet are anything to go by, then there's a possibility that Android N will actually end up being labelled as 'Android 7.0 Nutella.' After all, we did see Android KitKat, so there's a high chance that Google might opt for another branded dessert name this time around as well.

It's likely that Android 7.0 N will be released at the end of the year, accompanied by possibly new Nexus hardware, succeeding the Nexus 5X, 6P. But of course, there's also a chance that Google might find it feasible to keep its current lineup in the market for another year. But we could be wrong at this point in time, since it's too early to speculate about upcoming hardware from the Mountain View giant.

When it comes to third-party manufacturers such as Samsung, it's likely that the final version of Android N will start rolling out to devices after when Nexus handsets and tablets have gotten the taste of Google's new dessert. If you're looking for a firm date, then we can't comment on it at all. But if past releases are anything to go by, then don't expect Android N to make it onto your non-Nexus device before January 2017. There's also a chance that your device manufacturer might skip updating you to Android N altogether just for the sake of pushing out new hardware to consumers.

Take a look at the Motorola Droid lineup for example, which was completely denied the latest version of Android despite being able to support it off the bat. But oh well, let's see how things pan out for users this time around.
