Google has finally revealed the name of its next version of Android and it's not Nutella. The company announced on Snapchat today that Android N will go by the name of Android Nougat.
12th dessert name is here: Android Nougat
The company has finally taken the wraps off the 12th dessert-themed name for Android. Today's announcement comes after the company asked users at Google I/O last month to submit suggestions for the name online. We saw a huge number of suggestions, including some strong contenders like Android Nutella and Neyyappam. Many were rooting for Nutella, but Nougat is certainly better than Android Namey McNameface that some users had suggested, and Google had taken a liking to.

For those unfamiliar, Nougat is a confectionary treat that is loaded with sugar or honey, and features roasted nuts. Fruits, egg whites are sometimes added in the snack too. We are also looking at a new mascot today, with green Android bot standing on three bars of the chewy sugary snack. Wondering about all the Android nicknames we have had so far? Here they are:
- Android 1.5 Cupcake
- Android 1.6 Donut
- Android 2.0-2.1 Eclair
- Android 2.2 Froyo
- Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread
- Android 3.0 to 3.2.6 Honeycomb
- Android 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich
- Android 4.1 to 4.3 Jelly Bean
- Android 4.4 KitKat
- Android 5.0 to 5.1 Lollipop
- Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Android Nougat (possibly 7.x)
Google released the first version of Android Nougat in March, and we have already seen a few developer previews coming our way. The release brings improved notification shade, new features to Doze battery mode, Daydream VR for mobile, and several other features and improvements to the mobile operating system. The final and public version of Android Nougat is expected to arrive sometime in the third quarter of the year.
