Following the AMD Radeon RX 480's launch there has been discussion regarding the card's power consumption. Specifically around the findings of some reviewers who have discovered that at least their samples were exceeding the 75W power limit over the PCIe slot.
As such AMD has decided to follow up with the following statement :
As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5. Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU's tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).
We've delved into this very topic on our end in our analysis piece published yesterday. A software update to curb PCIe power consumption, or divert a portion of to the 6-pin connector would put more minds at ease. It's going to be interesting to see what sort of solution AMD's software team has come up with and to what extent it may be effective.
