When it comes to the iPhone 7, it won't pay much attention towards display. Instead, the device will be upgrading camera, design and a couple other areas. Material wise, it should come with a Gorilla Glass display this time around as well. There's been no talk about Sapphire for the device and with Corning having released Gorilla Glass 5, there shouldn't be any in the future either.
Corning Launches Gorilla Glass 5 Capable Of Withstanding Longer Drops In Lab Conditions
Even as our smartphones continue to become more advanced day by day, there are still a couple of factors which have failed to match this rate. For manufacturers, overcoming simple problems such as durability and battery life often prove to be the most difficult. Apple's been no stranger to this rule as well. The first 5.5 inch smartphone launched by the company developed bending issues of its own. After all, if you make a phone too thin, then it's going to need adequate materials to withstand this stress as well.
For the iPhone 7's display, looks like material won't be a problem for Apple. Folks over at Corning, who've been making glass since the light bulb was invented, have just released Gorilla Glass 5. Gorilla Glass 5, according to them, improves durability a lot. Developed especially for smartphones, its core strength is with height. Gorilla Glass 5 will be able to withstand longer drops, for greater periods of time. Under controlled conditions, it is reported to have stood its ground 80% of the time, from drops as high as 1.6 meters.
“With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses. With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.” -John Bayne, VP Corning.
If Apple does choose Gorilla Glass 5 for the iPhone 7, display should at least see one critical upgrade. Both Apple and Corning have been working together on the iPhone for quite a while and this partnership looks to be heading in the future as well. Things should become clear in less than two months, when Apple finally launches the iPhone 7. After that, we can go back again towards deciphering what changes will be introduced on the iPhone 8.
