Yooka-Laylee, the platform game currently in development by Playtronic for PC and consoles, is still far from release, but those who have supported the project early on will be able to get a taste of its experience starting today.
Playtronic has confirmed a few hours that the Yooka-Laylee Toybox will become available for eligible backers later today. The Yooka-Laylee Toybox has been created from scratch for backers and cannot be considered as a traditional demo. In the final release, environments will be much detailed than in the Toybox.
The Toybox is a self-contained, spoiler-free sandbox designed to give Yooka-Laylee backers a taste of the platforming mechanics set to appear in the final game. There are moves to try, custom-built props to play with, secrets to discover and yes, shiny collectibles to hunt out, but it’s only a small sample of the finished production – and visually incomparable.

Yooka-Laylee was originally scheduled for a 2016 release, but the team eventually confirmed that their platforming game is only going to be released in the first quarter of next year, with the additional months allowing them to further polish the game.
“After a lot of soul searching and knowing through dialogue with our fans that they value quality and polish above all, we’ve made the difficult decision to lock the release of Yooka-Laylee to Q1 2017,” Price said. “While we felt confident we could ship the game in October as originally planned, the team has decided that it would like to add a few extra months’ polish to our schedule. Ultimately, this will allow us to release a better game to the thousands of fans who’ve supported us throughout development.”
Yooka-Laylee launches on PC and consoles next year.
