Gearbox CEO says that a free upgrade for Bulletstorm is 'not possible.' Last week during The Game Awards 2016, Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition was announced to be coming to PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, there's some bad news if you own Bulletstorm on PC and were expecting some sort of cheap upgrade path to the Full Clip Edition.
Gearbox's Randy Pitchford confirmed on Twitter that anyone who owns the original Bulletstorm on PC will not be getting Full Clip Edition for free or even at a discounted rate. Pitchford explained that since they are just publishing someone else's game they wouldn't be able to provide any upgrade option to PC owners of the original Bulletstorm, free nor discounted, who purchased the 2011 over-the-top shooter.
If you remember, developer People Can Fly retained ownership of Bulletstorm after they split from Epic last year. The game was originally published by Electronic Arts.
Folks have been pointing to Darksiders Warmastered Edition and Bioshock: The Collection as exceptions to the rule, but the Gearbox Software CEO clarified that Darksiders' new owners hold all rights to the game past, present and future. This doesn't mean that fans haven't stopped expressing their disappointment with the announcement.
This just goes to show that when it comes to games publishing, the water can be a bit murky when dealing with IPs that have shifted ownership.
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition comes out April 7 on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One and will be priced at $49.99. Anyone who pre-orders the game will be able to play through the campaign as videogame's original wisecracking bad boy, Duke Nukem.
