Sony Could Announce a Duo of High-End Phones at CES 2017

Xperia X Performance and the Xperia XZ were the only Snapdragon 820-powered smartphones announced in 2016. With CES 2017 officially kicking off next month, Sony is rumored to follow up the high-end lineup with two additional flagship smartphones.

One Handset Could Feature a Snapdragon 821 – Snapdragon 835 Offering Might Arrive in Second-Half of 2017

According to details from a Chinese source, the two Xperia handsets will feature the following model names:

  • Xperia G3121: This one will feature a 5.2-inch display
  • Xperia G3112: The handset will come with a 5.5-inch display

If the rumor turns out to be true, then it will be the first time that we see a Snapdragon 820-powered smartphone from Sony sporting a screen size of 5.5 inches. Phablets are the most common and popular form factors in a smartphone because they feature natural benefits thanks to that enormous screen size. Those benefits range from a larger battery capacity and more screen real estate. It is also possible that a Snapdragon 821-powered variant could be announced at the CES 2017 trade show, but take the aforementioned info with a grain of salt.

We don’t believe that it would do wonders for Sony if it ends up releasing smartphones sporting a Snapdragon 820, primarily because with Qualcomm having announced its Snapdragon 835, the world’s first 10nm FinFET chipset to be present in smartphones and tablets, all of the Japanese tech giant’s competitors will be racing to incorporate the flagship SoC inside its own devices, leaving Sony’s phones biting the dust when it comes to performance and efficiency.

It is possible that during MWC 2017 or even during IFA, Sony announces its Snapdragon 835-powered offerings on sale, but if the above-mentioned rumor turns out to be true, then it isn’t a very astute decision in my opinion. Sony’s success in the smartphone market isn’t well known, and it is due to lack of competitive pricing and skimping out on a few features that are actually present in modern-day flagships.
