Open the housing of the Surface Studio, and you will find two storage drives present inside the machine. One of them is a 2.5-inch hard drive that utilizes the SATA interface, while the other one is an M.2 drive that is present a few inches away from the machine. The easiest part of the video tutorial appears to be when you attempt to replace the M.2 SSD, and replacing it with a faster SSD is a piece of cake. Since all drives featuring the 2.5-inch form factor use the SATA interface, it will be a breeze to replace them. However, the problem arises when the drive is located below the copper cooling solution. This means that you will have to remove this solution that cools the CPU and GPU using a certain screw driver which you’ll know about once you watch the video. The drive is locked in place thanks to a mounting bracket and removing that, you can install a brand new hard drive in its place. However, when you’re mounting back the copper cooling solution, it is advised that you re-apply the thermal compound on both the CPU and GPU to allow proper contact between the cooling solution and these two components.
Also keep in mind that because the Surface Studio features several USB ports, you can install Windows 10 via a USB flash drive, which is perhaps the easiest part of the entire installation.
