Gmail for Android payments

Google has finally added the payments ability to its Gmail app for Android. The feature had been a part of Gmail desktop for long, but now with the latest update to the Gmail for Android, the app will be able to request and send payments. The new feature is placed within the attachment option, which is used to add media and document files to an e-mail. Google is currently rolling out the feature in the US with version 7.2.26 of Gmail for Android needed to enable it.

Similar to the Gmail web, you can attach the payment request or send the payment within the e-mail. The receiver would get the mail and see the payment or payment request inline with the message. The new feature makes it even easier to transfer money online. To redeem the money that you get via Gmail payment, simply open the message with attached money and tap on 'Claim Money,' you'll then be redirected to a verification and sign-up page for Google Wallet.

To make use of the feature, you have to tap on the attachment icon and then select ‘Send money,' which opens Google Wallet panel that asks you to enter the amount and also add an invoice for the same. Google Wallet powers the payment process, and it does not levy any fees on sending, receiving or transferring money to your bank account.

In a blog post, Google says:

"Recipients can receive or request money right from the email itself—without having to install another payment app. They can even arrange for money they receive to go directly into their bank account. Either way, it’s completely free for both of you."

The best part about the new addition is that the e-mail recipient getting the payment request need not have Google Wallet installed on his phone. They'll have other payment options within the payment e-mail. It means that they can choose any mode of payment (debit card, credit card, net banking, etc.) to complete the transaction. We think that with the inclusion of payments within the Gmail app, users are going to get benefitted in a large way. Also, for the ones who had been using the feature on Gmail's web OS, you can now make the request right from your Android phone anytime.

There's no doubt that this is one valuable addition the Gmail app for Android, but it is worth pointing out that you can't send or receive money between two countries through Google Wallet.
