First HDR AMD FreeSync 2 Monitor Unboxed – Samsung CHG70 Featuring 27″ Curved Quantum Dot 1440p 144Hz Panel

Khalid Moammer

The Samsung CHG70 has been one of the most highly anticipated HDR gaming monitors since its announcement a few months back. The monitor appears to be finally nearing its launch as a couple of lucky reviewers at technopat.net got their hands on a sample to unbox and showcase.

This is the world's first HDR FreeSync monitor, technically making it the very first FreeSync 2 monitor we've seen yet. It features Samsung's latest 27" curved Quantum Dot panel with 125% sRGB coverage, a 2560x1440 resolution 144Hz refresh rate and a blisteringly fast 1ms response time. The CHG70 hits the holy trifecta of the perfect gaming monitor, accurate colors, low response times and high refresh rates with adaptive refresh rate technology.

AMD's FreeSync 2 Initiative

AMD announced the FreeSync 2 brand and initiative back in January of this year at CES 2017. The technology aims to build on the FreeSync standard in a number of key ways. A key difference is going to be in the certification process. All FreeSync 2 certified monitors are required to be low latency, high refresh rate, HDR ready and Low Framerate Compensation compatible. These tighter standards guarantee a more premium experience for gamers on any FreeSync 2 monitor compared to standard FreeSync.

"Gamers have spoken and they've made FreeSync™ the overwhelming choice and definitive industry standard for smooth, stutter-free gaming," said Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager of gaming, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD. "Radeon FreeSync™ 2 technology is the first of its kind that combines HDR support with dynamic refresh rate technology, and does it in a seamless, plug-and-play manner that improves gaming quality automatically when the right content is present."

All GPUs that support the original FreeSync standard will automatically be compatible with FreeSync 2. Both iterations of the technology will co-exist to serve different segments of the market. FreeSync 2 being designated only for the cream of the crop.
