WWDC is here folks and Apple's made sure that the event isn't about software. We've got a lot of hardware upgrades for you today, both for desktops and for notebooks. Apple's upgraded its iMac lineup significantly, and just at the right time. Not in the too distant past, the iMac used to be a great platform for developers, especially at the time when Apple debuted the 5K Retina iMac. After that, the company kinda dropped the ball. Apple's back today folks, and the iMacs get some serious overhauls. Take a look below to find out more.
Apple Brings Kaby Lake To The iMac; Improves Display, RAM And More
Today's a good day for iMac folks. It's been two years since Appe last upgraded the lineup. Now, the company is finally showing its developer base some much needed love. At WWDC we get a significantly upgraded display for the iMac. Apple's launched its desktop in two screen size variants, 21.5 and 27 inches. Displays for both of them see a massive improvement of 43% or 500 nits.
Configuration wise, the 21.5 inch will be able to support 32GB of RAM. Its larger brother, the 27 inch iMac will drive things up to 64GB. Apple also embraces USB Type-C on desktop with the iMacs. The pair get two Thunderbolt 3 ports. At the graphics end, for the 21.5 inch iMac, you'll start with the Intel Iris Pro 640. Go higher, to 4K and you'll be able to choose between the Radeon Pro 555 and 560.
For the 27 inch, 5K Retina iMac, VR will make a serious debut all around. The desktop will support AMD's Radeon Pro 570, 575, 580 and 8GB VRAM. These are some serious upgrades for the iMac and will have a lot of developers drooling around. After all, the lineup's been mostly ignored as Apple's struggled with the iPhone. Today's a good day for Cupertino as its finally starting to get its head out of the sand. The tech world's a lot bigger than the iPhone, Apple, and it's time that you realized that.
What we'd have loved more is some serious design upgrades on the iMac as well. Apple should have gone full circle and improved the overall synergy for its gadgets; a fact that's clearly reminiscent of the Jobs era. Still, we're happy.
