Every smartphone or tablet comes with an expiry date when the manufacturers would stop providing assistance for it or stop giving out updates.

Not many companies are straight up with such kind of information as that could act as a negative factor, but Google works otherwise. The company had recently revealed that its Pixel and Nexus device would be enjoying software updates for two years and security updates for three years. Now, in the latest revelation of important information, Google has updated its support to clarify how long it will support Nexus and Pixel devices with online and telephonic assistance.

On the support page, Google writes for Pixel/Nexus phones:

If you bought your device from the Google Store, updates will typically reach your device within 2 weeks. If you bought your device elsewhere, updates can take longer.

Nexus devices get Android version updates for at least 2 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store. After 2 years, we can't guarantee more updates.

According to the Minimum update & support periods table on the support page, it is stated that Google Pixel phones will not get “guaranteed telephone or online support” from October 2019.

It means that your Pixel or Nexus device is eligible for assistance until the period of three years from the date when it went on sale on Google Store. During the three years, the device gets coverage for security updates from Google, and you will be able to call or chat with Google's support team whenever your device acts up. After the end of support period, you will no longer be eligible to contact Google with your device issues. Other OEMs also have the same policy, but they do not bring it into public view like Google.

Notably, Google will keep supporting the Nexus 6P and 5X through October 2018. For Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, the support will end in October 2017.
