It is heartbreaking to hear that smartphones get something so undeniably attractive such as the edge-to-edge glass display, only for a hardware complication to present itself for the company. Such might be the case with the upcoming iPhone 8, as an analyst claims that Apple has hacked all hope of incorporating an under-glass Touch ID fingerprint reader, which would be present at the front side of the smartphone.
Ming-Chi Kuo Claims That Apple ‘Canceled’ Plans for a Front-Facing Touch ID Sensor on the iPhone 8 - Other Alternatives Have Been Detailed Below
According to an investors’ note that grabbed the attention of AppleInsider, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo states that Apple has axed its plan to incorporate the use of an under-glass Touch ID sensor in the upcoming iPhone 8 that is expected to be announced in September. The analyst did not provide info as to when the tech giant made this decision, but an under-glass fingerprint reader was expected to be the most anticipated features of the bezel-less iPhone.
Kuo also stated that Apple would swap out capacitive sensing technology and replace it with an optical solution capable of reading the user’s fingerprint through OLED panel stacks. This approach would no longer require Apple to use a physical home button. However, if an embedded fingerprint reader is not going to be used, what does Apple plan to use as a form of biometric security to prevent unauthorized intrusion in your expensive iPhone 8?
It is possible that Apple does not stick to fingerprint sensors at all and replace it with an advanced facial recognition upgrade. Multiple sources have affirmed that the next-generation handset will sport a front-facing camera capable of executing complex depth-sensing operations, but whether the system is accurate or secure enough for protecting your information is currently unknown.
With this revelation, it looks like the change will be seen with the launch of the Galaxy S9, the Galaxy Note 9 and of course, the iPhone 9. Still, it would have been nice to see an under-glass Touch ID sensor, especially after the iPhone 8 has been incessantly stated to be the most revolutionary iPhone that we’ve seen in ages.
