Galaxy Note 9 Might Get Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor – Galaxy S9 Fans Will Be Disappointed

Design complications prevented the Galaxy S8 and the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 to get an under-display fingerprint reader and according to an analyst, it looks like even Apple has canceled plans of incorporating this technology on the iPhone 8.

Rumors have suggested that Samsung would make daunting efforts to make sure that the Galaxy S9 would feature such an upgrade, but it looks like the report of a popular analyst has denied this. The under-display fingerprint sensor is expected to debut on the Galaxy Note 9.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has a new report in which he states that since the Galaxy S9 will not be directly competing with the 2018 iPhone, Samsung will not risk time and effort in using the under-display fingerprint sensor technology for the handset. The Note 9 however, is going to be a different story thanks to the announcement time-frame of the phablet and 2018 iPhone. A portion of this report has been detailed below.

“Since OLED iPhone has canceled under-display fingerprint recognition/touch ID function, and as Galaxy S9 will have the new selling points of upgraded iris recognition and dual camera, Samsung has no need to risk adopting under-display optical fingerprint solution in a hurry.”

That’s not to say that Samsung might not be swayed from actually using this under-display sensor on the Galaxy S9 because there is a very high probability that it will. Mounting the sensor at the back and right next to the camera lens makes it difficult to reach and feel out, giving Samsung sufficient motivation to try out something new with its 2018 flagship family.

However, it is also possible that the tech giant makes efforts to further strengthen its facial recognition and iris scanner on the Galaxy S9. A previous report detailed that the Galaxy S8’s facial recognition scanner can easily be bypassed by holding up a high-resolution photograph, so this is one key area where Samsung should divert its attention to when it is prepping to releasing a new series of handsets for 2018.
