Galaxy S9 to Use Substrate-Like PCB to Feature Larger Battery – Galaxy S8 Features Small Cell in Comparison to Its Large Display

With the Galaxy S8’s 5.8-inch display and Galaxy S8+’s massive 6.2-inch screen, it should be noted that both of these flagships aren’t as large as their display sizes would make them appear. That’s the brilliance of massively reducing bezels and increasing screen-to-body ratio.

However, while the Infinity Display looks undeniably breathtaking, the reduction of these bezels does complicate matters for Samsung as now it cannot take advantage of more space to add in a larger battery, which is why the handset features a 3,000mAh cell. However, with the Galaxy S9, the tech giant will be using another approach to make sure that future users can get more screen-on time with the 2018 flagship.

SLP or Substrate-Like PCB in the Galaxy S9 Will Connect Major Smartphone Components Together and Will Double up in Efficiency

SLP or Substrate-like PCB is regarded as a next-generation smartphone component that Samsung will be using for its future mobile phones. According to ET News, it will not only connect major smartphone components ranging from the SoC to NAND flash memory and DRAM, but its efficiency level will also improve. This is done by increasing the number of layers while reducing area and width through semiconductor package technology.

With modern-day handsets, not only is the use of larger batteries important, but companies also need to maximize internal space meaning that logic boards need to get smaller. An SLP can satisfy both conditions, allowing the Galaxy S9 to feature a bigger battery while maintaining crisp thin bezels at the same time. It is also expected that the ‘soon to be released’ iPhone will be taking advantage of the same technology because it too will feature an edge-to-edge glass and near bezel-less form factor.

The use of SLP will also trump previous-generation board technology as a lot of manufacturers will attempt to sizably reduce the bezels of their high-end phone offerings. However, seeing as how they will run into the same complications of not being able to fit in large battery capacities, they too will have to adapt accordingly or risk incorporating smaller cells.

With the Galaxy S9, we should hope for better things to come as far as improved battery timings are concerned.
